Walter Henning (St. Anthony's, South Huntington, NY) wasted no time on Tuesday evening before break his own national junior record. On his first attempt, Henning threw the 6-kilogram hammer a record distance of 72.28m. After a second round foul, Henning was consistent in the next three rounds before again breaking his own record on his final attempt. By the day's end, Henning had bettered his old record by more than three feet. His previous record of 71.62m (235'00") was set at the USA Junior National Chamionships in June.
After improving his 16# personal best on Saturday, Jordan Stray (Centralia, WA) added four feet to his 6-kilogram personal best. Stray and Henning were the only juniors participating in the competition.
Quotes from Walter Henning:
“I was hoping to get those marks earlier in the season, not in the summer. My wire was a little shorter – about ¼” – after it hit the cage on one of my throws, but it worked out OK. (On that record throw) I didn’t know it was a record when I let it go.”
“It was great to be out here throwing with all the great post-collegians. I threw against some of them at the Penn Relays, so it was nice to be on the field with them again.”
About going to Beijing for World Juniors: “I get butterflies thinking about it.”
