Winkler breaks 70 feet to win Weightarama 2011

Aleide Fernandes (Central Falls, RI) added the 2011 Weightarama title to her wins at the New England and Rhode Island championships over the past few weeks. This time, however, the competition was much closer. Fernandes bested runner up Karin Foster (Bloomfield, CT) by just more than a foot. Cathy Liebowitz (Lebanon, NH) threw a personal best of 51'02.75" for third place. On the boy's side, Rudy Winkler (Averill Park, NY) walked away with the surprise win over favorite Joe Velez (Classical, Providence, RI). Winkler, who is just a sophomore broke 70 feet for the first time with a final mark of 71'07.50." That mark moves him up to fifth on the national performance list and makes him the eight thrower this season to break 70 feet.
