Ionata and Cooper win Rhode Island State TitlesPublished by
The favorites took home both the boys and girls titles at the 2013 Rhode Island State Championships, but that didn't mean the meet was without excitement or exploits. State-leader Mathaline Cooper (Classical, Providence, RI) won the girls competition with a big personal best of more than five feet. Her winning throw of 178'7". That mark moves Cooper up to number 26th all-time in the nation, and sixth best all-time in Rhode Island. She currently ranks third in the nation. Leia Mistowski (Narragansett, RI) turned in a solid performance for second place and Destinee Barrette (Pilgrim, Warwick, RI) added a personal best to claim the bronze position. In the boys competition, Charlie Ionata (Barrington, RI) laid down another solid performance. His best effort of 240'5" not only added eight feet to his personal best and secured the win by 15 feet, but it moved him up every nearly every ranking list. He moved from third to second in the nation for 2013, but he also moved into the top 10 all-time. He currently is the ninth best high school thrower in American history, and second best from Rhode Island. And Ionata was hardly the only boy with a big personal best. Runner-up Mahlik Handley (South Kingstown, Wakefield, RI) added eight feet to his best to place second. Clarence Gallop (Central, Providence, RI) added four feet to his best to place third. Carlos Magnum (Central, Providence, RI) and Adam Kelly (Barrington, RI) were also both over 200-feet. This was only the second time five throwers had been over 200 feet at the Rhode Island state championships (it also happened in 1998), and it marks the depest competition ever at the meet. 2013 RIIL Outdoor Track & Field Championships - 6/1/2013 Presented by The Bill Falk Fund Brown University Boys Hammer Throw ========================================================================== Name Year School Finals ========================================================================== 1 Charlie Ionata SR Barrington Hs-Ri 240-05 73.27m 2 Mahlik Handley SR South Kingstown-RI 225-07 68.75m 3 Clarence Gallop SR Central HS RI 218-08 66.64m 4 Carlos Mangum SR Central HS RI 210-00 64.00m 5 Adam Kelly SO Barrington Hs-Ri 203-02 61.92m 6 Connor Fugere JR Woonsocket HS - RI 192-05 58.64m 7 Bryan Zapata JR Hope - RI 188-10 57.55m 8 Bobby Colantonio FR Barrington Hs-Ri 187-01 57.02m 9 olusegun Vadis JR Classical - RI 184-02 56.13m 10 Matt Casbarro SR B.Hendricken-Ri 177-11 54.22m 11 Brian Bianchi SR West Warwick Hs-Ri 171-01 52.14m 12 Joseph Mattson JR Rogers-RI 165-10 50.54m 13 Brandon Amo SR B.Hendricken-Ri 165-01 50.31m 14 Giovanni Gray SR Lincoln HS - RI 163-00 49.68m 15 Mike Alvernaz SO Barrington Hs-Ri 149-03 45.49m -- Alexander Madoian SR North Kingstown-RI FOUL -- Chris Celona JR B.Hendricken-Ri FOUL Girls Hammer Throw ========================================================================== Name Year School Finals ========================================================================== 1 Mathaline Cooper SR Classical - RI 178-07 54.43m 2 Leia Mistowski JR Narragansett-RI 163-05 49.80m 3 Destinee Barrette SR Pilgrim - RI 156-11 47.82m 4 Alva Hicks SO Classical - RI 149-06 45.56m 5 Victoria Ebert JR Exeter-W.Gr.-RI 142-08 43.48m 6 Abby Cousens SO Portsmouth HS - RI 140-11 42.95m 7 Maddison Caron JR Pilgrim - RI 134-10 41.09m 8 Kendra Plant SR Cumberland Hs-Ri 133-00 40.53m 9 Cheyanne Nalle JR Woonsocket HS - RI 127-11 38.98m 10 Briana O'Grady SR South Kingstown-RI 127-03 38.78m 10 Courtney Jacobsen FR Toll Gate - RI 127-03 38.78m 12 Lauren Swanson SO E.
