Sophomore Rudy Winkler (Averill Park, NY) ended last indoor season as the top freshman in the nation. At his first meet this year, he turned in a convincing win with a personal best throw. Winkler won the 42nd annual Dartmouth Relays in Hanover, NH with a throw of 65'09.75". His best from last season was an impressive 62'08.00", less than a foot under the national freshman class record. Reuben Horace (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) took second place with a five foot personal best of 62'08.00". Mike Maloof (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) took third place with a big season's best after he struggled a little in his first competition in December.

The girl's competition was very close. Local thrower Cathy Liebowitz (Lebanon, NH) blasted a throw of 47'4" in the first round to take the early lead while Robin McFetters (Barrington, RI) started slowly with two fouls. However, McFetters regrouped and nearly won the competition in the fifth round with a throw of 47'01.50". In the end, Liebowitz held on for the win.
