John Freeman (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) and Megan Maloney (LaSalle Academy, Providence, RI) both won titles at the Rhode Island State Championships on Saturday. Freeman won in convincing fashion. Despite opening with a foul, Freeman threw over 215' in the second round. In the final round he improved to 223'00", while second place went to Brendan Lodge (Bishop Hendricken, Warwick, RI) at 206'10". Maloney was much closer in her win. Maloney opened up with her best throw in the first round. Runner-up Meg Joyce (South Kingstown, Wakefield, RI) made the competition close by throwing a personal best of155'08" in the fourth round to come within three inches of Maloney. However, Joyce was unable to produce another PR and Maloney held on for the win.
On the west coast, Daniella Thu (Monte Vista, Spring Valley, CA) won the California State Hammer Championships with a new state record throw of 162'04". The event was hosted by UC Davis and also saw Buck Sullivan (Vacaville, CA) win the boy's competition with a throw of 199'01". In Georgia, Kim Williams (Alexander, Douglasville, GA) once again improved her national lead to 173'00".
Lastly, there is a correction as to the freshman record announced last week. Allison Horner (Lovett, Marietta, GA) supposedly set the freshman record last weekend, but it was discovered that Arianna Lugo (Los Altos, Hacienda Heights, CA) actually surpassed the record two days before Horner. Lugo threw 155'10" at the Memorial Day Weekend Event hosted by Citrus College in California. Lugo had a great series with five throws over 150' and two over 155'.
