McCullough breaks U.S. junior record at World Junior trials

Princeton freshman Conor McCullough has accumulated almost every junior record around in the past two years. He brok the U.S. high school records with implements of every weight, from 12-pound to 16-pound. This year, he continued his success and broke the U.S. junior national record with the senior 7.26-kilogram hammer. However, Walter Henning's throw of 76.92m to win the 2008 World Junior Championships was still on the records as the U.S. junior record with the international under-20 6-kilogram implement. That all changed on Friday when McCullough unleashed a throw of 78.28m to win the U.S. junior hammer throw title in Des Moines, Iowa. McCullough also had two other throws that eclipsed Henning's previous record.

With the win, McCullough secured himself a spot on the U.S. squad that will compete at next month's world junior championships in Moncton, Canada. There he will seek to improve upon the silver medal he won at the 2008 World Junior Championships. Joining him will be runner up Justin Welch (Eastwood HS, Pemberville, OH). Welch only had two legal throws, but his third round attempt of 70.29m was more than enough to earn second place. In third was New Balance Nationals champion Alec Faldermeyer (Minisink Valley HS, Slate Hill, NY), followed by Davis Fraker (McIntosh HS, Peachtree City, GA). Fraker and Faldermeyer sit atop the high school rankings with the 6-kilogram hammer, having both thrown over 71 meters with that implement this year. However, Faldermeyer struggled until managing a good throw in the final fround and Fraker had five fouls after his first attempt of 62.67m.
