The 2007 outdoor season has come to an end with senior Walter
Henning (St. Anthony's, South Huntington, NY) and junior Allison Horner
(Lovett, Marietta, GA) leading the final performance lists. Henning
finished the season undefeated and dominated nearly every competition.
His bests of 255'11" (12 pound) and 241'05" (6 kilogram) established
new national records. He also led the nation in the 16 pound hammer
with a toss of 209'07". Next year he will continue his pursuits at the
University of North Carolina. Also notable this year on the boy's side
was sophomore Conor McCullough (Chaminade, West Hills, CA). McCullough
broke Henning's national sophomore class record and came close to
beating him at Nike Outdoor Nationals. McCullough's best of 243'11"
ranked second for the year.
The girl's field was much closer with four athletes surpassing 170
feet. The event's diversity was also on display as the top five
throwers on the final performance list were all from different states.
Like Henning, Horner led the nation during the entire season. She also
added a win at Nike Outdoor Nationals, but only placed third at the
USATF Junior Championships. Gabby Midles (Camas, WA), who ranks second
on the list, was the top high school athlete at that meet and also the
top American thrower at the Golden West Invitational. Freshman Casey
Kraychir (Twentynine Palms, CA) ranked third and also set an impressive
new national freshman class record of 173'04".
